1. Wash with a mild cleanser.
I advise my patients who have dry and sensitive skin, seasonal allergies, eczema, and atopic dermatitis that a mild cleansing agent is all they need and be gentle. Don’t scrub your skin as if it were a dirty pot in the sink. A nice quick cleanse daily will remove the extra dirt and skin without taking too much off your skin. Bacteria is normally found on the skin, and washing keeps the number of bacteria down and prevents infection.
2. Add your moisturizer as soon as you dry the skin.
The perfect time to moisturize is when the skin already has cells plumped with water from the cleanse. Moisturizing right after a cleanse locks the moisture in.
3. Exfoliate regularly.
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead or dry cells from the skin. This can be done manually with a cloth, facial cleansing tools, or with professional grade skin products that contain natural acids to break down the dead layer of skin. Sensitive skin cannot tolerate daily exfoliation so be sure to check with your medical provider or aesthetician before using a professional grade product.
4. Keep your body hydrated.
Did you know that I can tell by the state of your skin whether you drink enough water? It’s for this reason that I advise my patients to drink plenty of water (at least 60 ounces) daily.
5. Protect your skin from the weather.
Sunscreen is a must every day – whether the sun is out or not. If you are planning to be in cold or in windy conditions, in addition to sunscreen, you will need additional moisturizer and a physical barrier like a scarf or hat to protect your skin.
